The last day of school brings joy to all students as it marks the end of homework, early morning routines, tests, presentations, assignments — everything that a school day entails. Students and parents are looking forward to the slower days of summer, and (hopefully) much-needed time to relax and recharge their batteries.
Yet when the initial excitement wears off, one of the things that we frequently hear kids say during the summer break is: “I’m bored!”. Furthermore, over the summer, kids might experience learning loss, which can have a dramatic impact on their academic success in the next school year. Summer school is an excellent way to minimize summer learning loss and keep kids from saying the dreaded, “I’m bored!”
Why Go to Summer School?
There are many benefits of taking summer courses and these include: freeing up some time during the school year for other activities (such as band, theater, or athletics); improving a grade; exploring new subjects; learning and developing new skills; and, last but not least, getting extra credits.
Summer school offers an excellent opportunity to prevent learning loss and keep students engaged in learning. For incoming 9th graders, in-person summer school allows them to experience the campus before the start of the school year and familiarize themselves with campus life, to help with a smooth transition to high school in the fall.
RBEF offers a great Summer Sessions program with in-person classes taught by RUHS teachers, as well as flexible, online courses which can be done at the student’s own pace, without having to attend classes or meetings at predetermined times.
How Does the RBEF Summer School Work?
Summer school courses are just like regular school courses, but condensed into a shorter time frame. Students need to take both session A and B to be able to get credits for the full year. The Summer Sessions run for six weeks (three weeks for each Session).
