Teacher Grants: Focusing On Student College and Career Readiness

Student Impact: up to 10,000 Kinder-12th grade students

Category: College and Career Readiness

Provides teachers with the funding to implement programs and supplies that allow them to further the college and career readiness for students. Past teacher grants include: science equipment such as heart rate monitors and microscopes utilized in classrooms, ethnic studies, students publishing their writing, and yoga and mindfulness embedded into the school day, microphones and sound system for chorus and theater programming, and much more!

Elementary School Funding

Credentialed Physical Education Teachers/Weekly Professional Development Time

Student Impact: 4,600 elementary students

Credentialed elementary P.E. teachers have the training to implement state P.E. standards. Additionally, as a team of P.E. teachers work with one grade level for an hour each week, this funding also provides self-contained classroom teachers the opportunity to meet for an hour each week, during the school day, to evaluate instructional designs, pacing guides and student work. It is a win-win; students received P.E. instruction from teachers who are highly motivated to teach quality P.E., and classroom teachers grew their knowledge and collaboration including: implementation of new curriculum and this year, as we continue to address learning loss due to COVID-19 emergency closures, common planning time and collaboration with school leaders will be pivotal.

5th Grade Band

Student Impact: up to 780 5th grade students

1st – 4th Grade Vocal Music Program

Student Impact: 3,100 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade students

RBEF will fund a full-time elementary band teacher and RBUSD has funded a second full-time teacher. The two teachers travel together and work at all eight of our elementary schools twice per week. As the vast majority of 5th grade students typically participate in the elementary band program across the school district, two teachers allow students to continue to receive a better music experience.

Science Camp Trip Transportation

Student Impact: 3,500 students in 5th – 8th grades

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, transportation costs for our schools for field trips has skyrocketed, causing the student/family costs of participation in outdoor science camp to increase almost 50%. That increase has led many schools to have to evaluate the feasibility of participation. This ask is to assist in off-setting the increased costs in order for grade levels across all elementary and middle schools to continue to participate in this enriching experience.

Elementary School First Lego League Robotics Teams

Student Impact: 175 students in 4th and 5th grade

The FIRST LEGO League introduces science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to students in grades 4-5 through fun, hands-on learning. Students engage in real-world problem-solving experiences through a guided robotics program. The utilize teamwork, innovation, communication and collaboration to compete in global competitions. The funding is intended to cover the cost of team competitions, coaching stipends and any robotics “kits” needed for the calendar year’s challenge.

Middle and High School Funding

Intramural Sports Program

Student Impact: 300 middle school students

Our two middle schools provide after school sports programs to approximately 300 students over the course of each year. Lack of student motivation and connectedness to peers and school during the middle school years is one of the greatest predictors for school dropouts and involvement in “at risk” behaviors. We ask participating families for a financial contribution, and this funding will supplement the costs to run the program. The implementation of intramural sports at the middle school level has significantly impacted feelings of connectedness for middle school-aged students during COVID recovery.

Museum of Tolerance Field Trip

Student Impact: Up to 800 8th grade students

The Museum of Tolerance (MOT) is the educational arm of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish human rights organization. The museum is dedicated to challenging visitors to understand the Holocaust in both historical and contemporary contexts and confront all forms of prejudice and discrimination in our world today (www.museumoftolerance.com). In support of our diversity, equity and inclusion mission, we believe this field trip is pivotal to help our students grow and develop into global citizens. This trip also serves to help students develop deeper background knowledge as the engage with core texts in 8th grade such as The Diary of Anne Frank.

High School Robotics Teams Support – Beach Cities Robotics

Potential Student Impact: 45 students from 9th to 12th grade

Beach Cities Robotics is a Southern California robotics team based out of Redondo Union High School that is committed to providing people of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to learn about STEM. Since 1998, the team has worked tirelessly to forward science and technology in our local and global communities. They are dedicated to this effort, with all of our students united by the common goal of being the best leaders and role models. Team members participate in all facets, from programming to design, from electrical to business. 95% of their machining capabilities in house which is a big change over the last several years. They fabricate on CNC routers, CNC lasers, 3D printers, manual mills, lathes, bandsaws and hand tools in lab. Students learn game analysis, 3D CAD design in Solidworks, programming in Java, electrical wiring, and coding of a scouting database. Awarding winning BCR team competes at the state and national level.

CyberPatriot

Potential Student Impact: approximately 50-75 students

CyberPatriot is the National Youth Cyber Education Program created by the Air & Space Forces Association to inspire K-12 students toward careers in cybersecurity or other science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation’s future. At the core of the program is the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, the nation’s largest cyber defense competition that puts high school and middle school students in charge of securing virtual networks. The funds will pay for team registrations, any necessary materials and coaching fees/stipends.

AVID Support/Membership Fees/Field Trips

Potential Student Impact: up to 200 middle school students and 200 high school students

AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a program dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college. The program trains educators to use proven practices in order to prepare students for success in high school, college and a career, especially students traditionally underrepresented in higher education. AVID: (1) teaches skills and behaviors for academic success, (2) provides intensive support with tutorials and strong student/teacher relationships, (3) create a positive peer group for students and (4) develops a sense of hope for personal achievement gained through hard work and determination.

Music Program Instrument Expansion

Potential Student Impact: approximately 100-200 students

In November 2022, California voters overwhelmingly passed Proposition 28, which will provide roughly $1 billion each year to California public schools in order to increase arts and music programming for students in pre-K through 12th grade. This proposition, however, requires that at least 80% of the funding be dedicated to additional staffing to run programming. RBUSD anticipates the expansion of instrumental offerings, including the expansions of strings at the secondary levels. This funding will be used to purchase new musical instruments to accompany the designated programming.

Project ECHO

Potential Student Impact: 300 students in 9th – 12th grades

Project ECHO offers students access to entrepreneurial and leadership skill programs geared to support students so they can thrive in college, careers and in their communities as change-makers. The program teaches business skills and simulates the real-world entrepreneurial process of taking an idea and learning how to turn it into a business. The program culminates in a showcase event where students present their start-ups to an audience that prepares students to compete in the Teen Business Plan Competition where student teams compete for cash prizes. The funding will provide access to Project ECHO lessons and curriculum for the RUHS Business Pathway teacher and simulations and competition access for all business pathway students.

E-Sports Development and High School Teams

Potential Student Impact: approximately 100 students

The last several years has seen the rise of E-sport teams in high schools across the country and many colleges offer esports programs for students, including scholarship programs. Esports encourages communication and coordination amongst student athletes, deepening their levels of interactions and teamwork. Additionally, esports teaching valuable skills such as streaming, production, programming, and management. Creating an esports team is currently the number one request of students at RUHS. RBEF funds pay the cost of purchasing and setting up equipment.

Building School Culture: Patricia Dreizler School-wide Cultural Arts & Music Experiences

Potential Student Impact: 80 Alternative Education High School Students

This funding would fund school-wide cultural arts and music experiences to support and foster student engagement at Patricia Dreizler High School. To address the social and emotional needs of these students, we hope to provide experiences that match the students’ particular arts and music interests.
