How to teach kids to give back to the community

The holidays are often called the season of giving. For children, this often comes in the form of receiving presents and gifts from friends and family. However, there are a number of ways that parents can teach their kids to give back to the community, especially during this festive time of year. The following are four easy ways to teach kids how to give back to others.   1.   Volunteer as a family. Often the best way to help children get involved is by volunteering together. Find a charity or group that the whole family can help, such as a local animal shelter or community garden. Volunteering together helps give back to the community while also letting your family create quality memories while spending time together. 2.   Involve them in the process. If you are cleaning out the house looking for items to donate, avoid discriminately picking clothes or toys without consulting your child. Instead, ask them to help you pick out items to give to other boys and girls; you may be surprised at how thoughtful and insightful even young children can be when it comes to making decisions together! 3.   One in, one out. It can be easy to feel as if you are drowning under a mountain of your child’s clothes, toys, or games. To prevent an overload of stuff – especially after the holidays have come and gone – put a one in, one out rule into effect. For every one new item your child buys or receives, they have to donate one old item to charity. Not only does this reduce the clutter in your home, but it also helps your child give back to others. 4.     Model your own behavior. Children learn by example, and our actions are more telling than our words. Show your child how important giving back to the community is by doing your own volunteering. Whether you’re collecting donations, volunteering in person, or even donating to a favorite charity, modeling giving back to the community can have a big impact on a child. Spread joy and cheer this holiday season by helping your child volunteer and give back to their local community! Volunteering and giving back to the community can help children learn how to positively impact the lives of those around them.
